Step by Step
Installation process
The process begins with a thorough inspection of the existing surface. Any cracks, uneven areas, or imperfections are addressed and repaired to ensure a smooth and stable substrate for the stucco. The surface is cleaned to remove debris, dirt, and contaminants that could hinder proper adhesion.
The installation commences with the application of a lath—a mesh-like material that acts as a framework for the stucco to adhere to. The lath is secured to the surface using nails or screws. This step is crucial for creating a secure bond between the stucco and the substrate, as well as allowing space for the stucco mixture to embed.
The scratch coat is the foundational layer of stucco. It consists of a mixture of Portland cement, sand, and water. This coat is hand-applied, often using a hawk and trowel. Once applied, the surface is scratched or scored to create a textured surface that enhances adhesion for the subsequent coats.
The brown coat, also known as the leveling coat, is applied once the scratch coat has partially set. This coat consists of a mix of cement, sand, and sometimes lime. It’s applied in a thicker layer and leveled to create an even surface. The brown coat provides additional strength and acts as a base for the finish coat.
The final layer is the finish coat, which defines the appearance. This coat is formulated with a specific blend of materials to achieve the desired texture and color. Skilled artisans carefully apply and manipulate the finish coat to achieve the chosen texture, whether it’s a smooth finish, lace texture, or other custom patterns.
Once applied, it needs time to dry properly. This involves spraying regularly and keeping the surface damp for several days to ensure proper curing. After curing, any minor adjustments or adjustments are made to ensure consistency in texture and appearance. The finished surface is now ready to showcase its enduring beauty and protection.
By carefully following these six steps, our professionals create an exterior finish that not only enhances the structure’s visual appeal, but also provides a protective weather barrier and adds insulating benefits. Properly executed installation not only enhances the aesthetics of a building, but also contributes to its durability, longevity and energy efficiency.
